Pin My Map is small on purpose
Pin My Map is a map of people you actually know. It is not a public feed, it is not a discovery app for strangers, and it has never had live location in it.
You add friends by invite, and nobody sees your map because they happened to find your name.
What Pin My Map never collects
This is the part people ask about most, so plainly: there is no GPS tracking in Pin My Map. It does not follow your phone around, and it could not show your friends where you are right now even if we wanted it to.
- No live location. Nothing in Pin My Map updates in the background.
- No precise addresses. Pins are cities, not street corners.
- No dates by default. A trip is a month and a year, so a pin says "Lisbon, March" rather than "Lisbon, the 14th to the 19th".
The one exception is yours to switch on: share a trip with Close Friends only and you can add the exact days, for that tag alone. Leave it off and there are no dates to share.
Everything on your Pin My Map is there because you typed it in.
Decide who sees what
Your friends are not one undifferentiated group, so Pin My Map does not treat them as one. Tag people as Close Friends, Family, Workmates, or anything you invent, then choose which tags can see each kind of pin.
- Past trips, future trips and your wishlist each get their own audience.
- Your home base city is visible to your friends, so people know where to find you.
- Any single pin can also be hidden from specific friends, without changing anything else.
If someone makes you uncomfortable
You should not have to put up with anyone on here. If a person is bothering you, Pin My Map gives you three things you can do, and you can do them in any order.
Block them
Blocking is immediate and total. They lose your map, you vanish from theirs, and neither of you can reach the other. You can see and undo your blocks later from your profile.
Report them
Reporting sends the account to us for review. Tell us what happened. It helps us act faster, and it helps us spot someone doing the same thing to other people.
Just remove them
Not everything is a safety problem. If a friendship has simply run its course, remove the friend. It is quiet, it is not a punishment, and it takes their access away all the same.
Small habits that help
- Only accept friend requests from people you actually recognise. Pin My Map is only as trustworthy as the people on it.
- Look over your privacy tags now and then, especially after adding a batch of new people.
- If you are about to travel somewhere you would rather not broadcast, narrow that pin to one tag, or hide it from specific friends.
If something on Pin My Map worries you and blocking is not enough, report it and tell us what happened. We would much rather hear about it.
